Dental X-rays are special images that show the inside of tissues in the mouth. They allow our team to have a full picture (quite literally) of your teeth, gums, and jawbone to help us monitor and evaluate your oral health. You may have concerns about whether X-rays are actually safe. Let’s take a look at the safety of dental X-rays.
Safety of Dental X-Rays
Pulses of energy, called electromagnetic radiation, are utilized to create an X-ray image. An image is created based on which tissues absorb the energy and which tissues allow it to pass through. Your genetic material, called DNA, can be altered by excessive and prolonged exposure to radiation. Mutations can result in excessive cell growth, called cancer, that hinders the function of normal cells.
How We Limit Your Radiation Exposure
Because of advances in technology, the radiation exposure from digital dental X-rays is incredibly low. Additionally, they are not taken every dental visit. The insight offered by X-rays images is, in general, worth the extremely minimal risk of cell damage. Before your X-rays are taken, we will drape a heavy lead vest over you to protect your body from radiation exposure. We’ll direct as little energy as possible at your oral cavity to keep you safe as we take X-rays images of your mouth from different angles.
If you believe you have any conditions that may make getting X-rays detrimental to your health, please consult with our team and your primary care provider!
