Sealants are a preventive dental treatment that can help prevent cavities fo kids, teens, and adults. They are thin coatings of special plastic that are brushed directly onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They are applied to molars because these have natural grooves and crevices that can trap bacteria and food particles.
Who Can Get Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are one of the most common preventive dental treatments for kids. Teens and adults can get dental sealants too if they desire!
Your child may benefit from sealants as soon as their permanent molars erupt. An adult mouth has (4) first molars and (4) second molars. The first molars usually come in around age 6, while the second molars usually erupt around 12 years of age. The sooner the grooves and pits in molars are covered, the less likely plaque and debris will build up and cause cavities on your child’s precious teeth.
At your child’s dental appointment, their dentist will examine the surfaces of their molars to check for any deep grooves or crevices that would benefit from a sealant. Over the next decade or so, they may wear down and only need to be replaced if you wish.
